The Chicken-Egg Question about Long Island's Breast Cancer Study

The Chicken-Egg Question about Long Island's Breast Cancer Study

Networking Magazine

Momentum continued to build in 1992, when West Islip breast cancer patient Lorraine Pace, believing she was living in a "cluster," petitioned her doctor, the Suffolk County Health Commissioner, an epidemiologist at University Hospital Medical Center at Stony Brook, Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center, Lou Grasso, managing editor of her local newspaper Suffolk Life, state senators Owen Johnson and Caesar Trunzo who provided a grant, and 17 friends and neighbors to help map the incidence of breast cancer in her community.

In Memory of Bella Abzug

In 1992, I had the honor and pleasure of meeting Bella Abzug at a One-In-Nine breast cancer meeting in Nassau County. Months after that meeting, I received a phone call from her. She asked that I come to City Hall and bring the breast cancer map that was done in my home in 1992 with the help of volunteers with and without breast cancer. She was very impressed with the work we did, and could not believe the high rate of breast cancer in West Islip that was recorded on the map. This map may have prompted her to get a mammography since she had spent much time on Long Island. Three months later, she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Leading Breast Cancer Advocate Launches Book Chronicling One Woman's Crusade to Bring About Awareness

Author Joan Swirsky's "Map of Destiny: Pinpointing A Cancer Epidemic on the Kitchen Table" vividly recounts Lorraine Pace's journey from breast cancer patient to pioneering advocate alerting the public to the existence of cancer clusters

December 29, 2005

Map of Destiny: Pinpointing a Cancer Epidemic on the Kitchen Table by Joan Swirsky

"Map of Destiny" is a detailed account of Lorraine Pace's creation of the West Islip breast cancer mapping project — the first such community-based project in the world. Lorraine's attempt to seek a correlation between environmental factors and clusters of the disease, told against the backdrop of her arduous and courageous battle against breast cancer, is the story of one woman's refusal to accept the status quo and her determination to keep breast cancer at the top of the public's health agenda. Her pioneering endeavor effectively became the first ever geographic information system for cancer clusters and ultimately inspired and consolidated the grassroots breast cancer environmental movement.
